The 7th annual Holyrood Summer School (HSS) was
a sell out event this year with 32 participants attending. Speakers
at this year’s
school included Andrew McLaughlin (Chief Economist RBS), John McTernan
(Political Secretary to the Prime Minister), Mary Dickson (MD FirstScotrail)
and John Elvidge (Permanent Secretary to the Scottish Executive)
to name but a few.
The school is a weeklong event where participants are able to gain
unique access to some of the people who make policy and politics
in Scotland and the UK. In the words of a former HSS participant,
the school is “a unique opportunity to meet with senior policy
makers and put forward your views in an informal setting”.
Jim Rennie, MD of Eglinton, hosts the school each year and designs
the day so that 4 speakers attend and speak for 30-40 minutes with
a further hour for an open question and answer session. Each day
the participants then finish with some reflection time in smaller
groups to discuss the key themes. The residential aspect of the HSS
means that the group is able to continue with their discussions over
dinner when they have and a chance to gather their thoughts, and
a glass of wine always helps the debate along!
The week is a great opportunity for senior leaders, managers and
executives to spend time with their peers across the public, private
and not for profit sectors discussing social, economic and political
issues that affect us all. To quote a previous attendee, “be
stimulated, be engaged, and most of all be prepared to join in. ..you’ll
not have the chance to meet and question so many prominent people
in such a short space of time again!”
We have started taking bookings for the 2006 Holyrood Summer School.

Coaching is everywhere at the moment - Executive coaching, Business
coaching, Life coaching - and it seems to be offered as a solution
to everything.
Is it really that simple? How do you find a coach who will fit with your
organisation and understands your motivation and goals, how do you achieve
company buy in, when is coaching appropriate, and when is it not?
What, then, is happening in practice? We have two speakers who appreciate
coaching but from different angles: the coached organisation and the coach!
They will share with us the journey to their current situation, what is
going well, and what they plan to do going forward.
About our speakers….
